Martin Tomlinson has been Chief Deputy Clerk of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since January 2025. Before coming to the court, Martin spent two years as Associate General Counsel of the United States Department of Justice’s Justice Management Division, and ten years as a trial attorney with the United States Department of Justice’s Civil Division. He was in private practice in Greenville, South Carolina from 2010 to 2013, and prior to that served as a term law clerk for Judge Michael A. Chagares of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and Judge Patrick Michael Duffy of the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. He graduated summa cum laude from the College of Charleston in 2004, and received his law degree from Yale Law School in 2007, where he was Managing Editor of The Yale Law Journal.
